Referring to Sir Henry May's Despatch No. 339

of the 24th. August, I have the honour to forward a copy of an

agreement made for the purchase of 20,000 tons of coal for ship-

-ment from Japan during 1917.

The coal will be required as follows:-

Railway.

.7,200 tons.

Government launches.....4,500

Public Works Department 2,500

Military Authorities....3,600

Sir Henry May satisfied himself after care- -ful enquiry that, in view of indications of a further rise in the price of coal in the near future, it was advisable to conclude this

contract.
